Anton aims his theatrical eye at the decisive moments in the lives of the world’s most infamous dictators: Mao Tse-Tung, Rafael Trujillo, Idi Amin, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, and Adolph Hitler. Transporting us to their formative years, The Iron Bridge offers a speculative glimpse into the nurture and the nature that transformed young men into some of history’s most horrifying and tyrannical figures.

Piatigorsky dazzlingly explores moments that are nothing more than vague incidents in the biographies of these men, expanding mere footnotes into entire realities as he ingeniously fills the gaps of the historical record.

“Anton Piatigorsky's pitch-perfect, acutely attuned stories delve deep, and far, and wide. The Iron Bridge is an assured, unique collection.”
— Pasha Malla, author, The Withdrawal Method, People Park

Goose Lane Editions would like to thank the Canadian Council for the Arts for their continued support.

Anton Piatigorsky has twice won the Dora Mavor Moore Award. Eternal Hydra, commissioned by the Stratford Festival, was called “one of the best Canadian plays of the past decade” by NOW magazine and will open in Vancouver at the Touchstone Theatre in October 2012. The chamber opera, Airline Icarus, for which he wrote the libretto, won the Italian Primo Fedora Award in 2011. He was most recently the playwright in residence for Soulpepper.

“An astounding collection of intricate and rigorous character studies. The Iron Bridge bravely takes us deep into the nuanced, damaged psyches of men we would prefer to think of as monsters. The most compelling stories I’ve read in years.”
— Sarah Polley, actress/director, Away From Her

“An absolutely thrilling read. What makes this book truly special is Anton’s ability to harness and exploit the reader’s pre-existing knowledge of, and chilling fascination with, his terrifying protagonists.”
— Albert Schultz, Artistic Director, Soulpepper Theatre
