The Shape of Content - Celebrate Creative Writing in Science and Math

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 - 4:00pm
The Fields Institute, 222 College Street (near Huron)

Eminent Mathematicians, Performers and Musicians collaborate to celebrate creative writing in Science and Math

Creative writing on science and mathematics is rarely encouraged or recognized. That’s why the publication of The Shape of Content, edited by Chandler Davis, Marjorie Wikler Senechal and Jan Zwicky, is so unique—and so deserving of its own remarkable commemoration. This is Not a Reading Series is pleased to co-present with theFields Institute at University of Toronto and publisher AK Peters an exciting commingling of thinkers and artists celebrating the joys of the creative act in science, art and mathematics.

Featuring math authorities Robert Moody, Philip Holmes, Alex Kasman, Donal O’ Shea and Marjorie Senechal, musician Aaron Davis and performances of works on Galileo and from the off-Broadway play Delicious Rivers, this is definitely not your usual academic book launch. That’s appropriate becauseThe Shape of Contentwas inspired by an unusual source–workshops at the Banff Centre for the Arts and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery.

The result is an amazing blend of poetry, short stories, essays and excerpts from plays, all put together as The Shape of Content and published by AK Peters. As the acclaimed Harvard mathematician has stated: “The Shape of Content is an exciting collection of poetry, fiction, drama and non-fiction that is inspired by, and sings of, the passion for mathematics…the pieces in this fine volume are a delight!”

Marc Glassman, Executive Director ofThis is Not a Reading Series and distinguished mathematician Chandler Davis will host the celebration. AThis is Not Reading Series event presented by the Force for Cultural Events Productions (FORCE), AK Peters, The Fields Institute, University of Toronto, NOW Magazine and Take Five on  CIUT.
